PRACTICE STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES
SETTING PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS
The College adopts policy in the form of practice standards and guidelines to help ensure that podiatrists meet a high standard of competence and ethical conduct in treating their patients.
Practice standards are prescriptive in nature in that they set out a required minimum level that must be demonstrated. Standards are enforceable rules. In every case a standard must be met unless it does not apply to the particular practice.
Practice guidelines provide recommendations regarding a desirable minimum level that should be obtained, or how to address a practice issue. Podiatrists are permitted some discretion and flexibility in deciding how to meet the described goals. Guidelines may actually have the force of a mandatory rule unless a practice can show equivalency through other measures.
